Krabi's main resort beach and the launching point for the longtails to Railay and the islands.
Ao Nang Beach, Krabi
Ao Nang is the busiest beach town on the Krabi mainland: a strip of sand with a promenade of restaurants, bars, dive shops and tour agents running behind it, and limestone headlands closing it at both ends.
Its real role is as a departure point. Longtails leave the beach all day for Railay, which has no road, and for Poda, Chicken Island and the Phi Phi and Hong island trips. Boats are bought at the beachfront ticket office rather than negotiated individually, and they leave when full.
The swimming is unremarkable by Krabi standards - the water is often silty and the beach narrows at high tide - and the town is where you sleep and eat rather than the reason you came. Everything worth seeing is a short boat ride away.
