Khao Sok National Park
Khao Sok covers rainforest that is considerably older than the Amazon, standing on limestone that has weathered into cliffs and towers. The park entrance and the village sit on the Sok river on the western side.
Trails run into the forest from the headquarters, from short river walks to full-day routes. Wildlife includes gibbons, hornbills, macaques and, rarely seen, elephants and tapir. The rafflesia, the largest flower in the world, blooms here between roughly January and March.
Tubing and canoeing on the Sok are the other staples. The park is a common overnight stop between Surat Thani and the Andaman coast, and Cheow Lan Lake is a separate trip from the eastern side.
