Ratchaprapha Dam, Surat Thani
Ratchaprapha - also called Chiew Larn dam - was completed in 1987 across the Phraek River, flooding the valley behind it and creating Cheow Lan Lake. The rock-fill wall and the viewpoint above it look out over the water and the first of the karsts.
The pier below the dam is where every boat onto the lake departs, so almost everyone visiting Cheow Lan passes through here. There is a national park checkpoint and a fee.
The flooding drowned an area of forest and displaced wildlife, some of which was relocated to the surrounding hills. The karst peaks that make the lake famous are the tops of the hills that were not submerged.
