Warorot Market - Kad Luang, the big market, in northern Thai - is the working market of Chiang Mai, between the old city and the Ping river. It is a three-storey covered hall with the food trade on the ground floor, textiles and clothing above, and stalls spilling out into the surrounding streets.
It is the best place in the city to see northern Thai food as locals actually buy it: sai ua herb sausage, nam phrik num chilli dips, cured pork, dried fruit, and mounds of sticky rice sweets. The upper floors carry hill-tribe textiles, cotton and lengths of fabric sold by weight.
The streets immediately around it form Chiang Mai's Chinatown, with a flower market alongside the river that trades through the night. It is a short walk east from Tha Phae Gate.
