Wat Hat Yai Nai, west of the city centre across the Khlong U Taphao, is known for Phra Phut Mahathammamongkol, a reclining Buddha thirty-five metres long and fifteen high - among the largest anywhere.

The image is finished in gold and white, and a chamber inside its base holds shrines and relics. The temple grounds are busy with local worshippers rather than tour groups.

Hat Yai is the commercial capital of southern Thailand and the main road and rail hub for the far south and the Malaysian border. The temple is a short ride from the centre and free to enter.
