Ao Leuk, Koh Tao
Ao Leuk is a compact bay on Koh Tao's south-east side with something most of the island's snorkelling spots lack: a proper sand beach to walk in from. The name means deep bay, and the bottom drops away steadily rather than abruptly.
The reef begins close to shore on both sides of the bay, so it is the usual recommendation for anyone who wants to snorkel without taking a boat. Equipment can be hired on the beach and there are a couple of places to eat.
A small access fee is sometimes collected at the road. The bay is sheltered but can pick up swell in the monsoon months.
