Karon lies between Patong and Kata and is the longest of the three, a broad three-kilometre stretch backed by dunes rather than by a town pressed up against the sand. It is noticeably less developed at the beach itself than its neighbours.
Its sand is unusually fine and dry and squeaks underfoot - a genuine local curiosity that visitors notice immediately. The beach shelves more steeply than Kata, so the shore break can be strong even on calm days.
The town sits back from the beach around the roundabout and the lagoon, which keeps the seafront quieter than Patong's. Monsoon red flags apply here as along the whole west coast.
