Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, Langkawi
Kilim is a river system on Langkawi's north-east coast where mangrove forest runs between limestone karst cliffs. It forms part of the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark, the first in South-East Asia.
Boats leave from Kilim jetty and thread the channels, stopping at bat caves in the limestone, at fish farms in the estuary, and at points where brahminy kites and white-bellied sea eagles circle overhead. The rock here is among the oldest in Malaysia.
Some operators feed the eagles to draw them in for photographs. It changes their behaviour and health, and the practice is discouraged - it is worth choosing a boat that does not do it.
