A royal waterfall on Phangan's east coast, carrying the carved initials of three Thai kings.
Than Sadet Waterfall, Koh Phangan
Than Sadet runs down through boulders to the sea on the east coast of Koh Phangan, inside the Than Sadet-Koh Phangan National Park. Its significance is royal: King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) visited repeatedly from 1888 and had his initials carved into a boulder here, and Rama VII and Rama IX later added theirs. The name means royal river.
The falls are a series of drops and pools through forest rather than a single sheer curtain, and several of the pools can be swum in. The carved stones are the reason the site is protected.
The east coast is the least developed side of the island and the access road has long been rough; conditions vary and are worth checking locally before setting out.
