Police Boat 813 was on patrol off Khao Lak on 26 December 2004 when the tsunami struck. The wave carried the vessel around two kilometres inland and set it down in a field, where it has been left exactly as it stopped.
The boat is now the centre of a memorial park, with the hull raised slightly and a walkway around it, and interpretive panels recording what happened along this coast - Khao Lak lost more people than anywhere else in Thailand. A wall carries the names of the dead. The scale of the thing at close range, and the ordinary farmland around it, is what makes the site effective.
It stands inland from Bang Niang beach, a short distance from the main coast road, and is generally visited alongside the memorials further north.
