The National Museum occupies the Wang Na, the palace of the deputy king, on the north side of Sanam Luang and a short walk from the Grand Palace. It opened as a museum in 1874 and holds the largest collection in Southeast Asia.
The permanent galleries run chronologically through the art of the region - Dvaravati, Srivijaya, Lopburi, Sukhothai, Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin - which makes it the one place to see how Thai sculpture actually developed rather than encountering it piecemeal in temples. Separate buildings hold royal funeral chariots, ceramics, textiles, weapons and musical instruments.
The Buddhaisawan Chapel within the grounds is a destination in its own right: an eighteenth-century hall with its original murals intact, housing the Phra Sihing Buddha, one of the most revered images in the country.
