Khao San Road, Bangkok

Khao San Road runs for about four hundred metres through Banglamphu, a few streets north of the Grand Palace. It was an ordinary rice-trading street - the name means milled rice - until guesthouses began opening in the early 1980s, and it became the point where overland routes through Southeast Asia converged.

Today it is a dense strip of budget hotels, bars, tattoo studios, travel agents and food carts, and it is loud at night in a way that is either the attraction or the reason to stay elsewhere. The quieter parallel streets - Rambuttri in particular - carry much of the same trade at a lower volume.

Its real advantage is position. Banglamphu is the only backpacker district inside the old royal island, so the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and the Golden Mount are all within walking distance, and Phra Athit pier on the river is a few minutes away.
