Chatuchak Weekend Market, Bangkok

Chatuchak - JJ Market to most people in Bangkok - covers around thirty hectares in the north of the city and runs to roughly fifteen thousand stalls. It is organised into twenty-seven numbered sections, and the numbering is the only practical way to navigate: the clothing sections, the ceramics, the plants and garden section, the antiques and the furniture each occupy their own blocks.

It is a genuine wholesale and retail market rather than a tourist creation, which is why the range is so wide - Thai designers sell alongside secondhand booksellers, orchid growers and people making furniture on the spot. The lanes between stalls are narrow and covered, and it gets very hot by the middle of the day.

The market is at its full extent at the weekend; a smaller plant and flower market trades midweek. It sits directly above Chatuchak Park and Mo Chit stations, so it is one of the easiest places in Bangkok to reach without a road journey.
